Yes…Melky Cabrera is still in the minor leagues. The Yankees brought up a young farmhand by the name of Phil Coke. Coke compiled impressive numbers in the minors at multiple levels of the organization. He put up these numbers at Trenton & Scranton: 135.2IP (W-L) 11-6 2.79ERA 124H 50R 42ER 44BB 137K .243AVG. He looked impressive in his Major League debut. He struck out two of the batters he faced..and allowed a single. Chad Moeller got the call to be a 3rd string/emergency catcher. He was hitting .227 with 1HR and 8RBI this season. Not impressive, but you can’t expect much from him. He is a pretty good defensive catcher though.
On Coke & Moeller….
“We’re going to use Coke out of the bullpen,” said manager Joe Girardi.
“He’ll be a pinch-hitter, we’ll use him as the third catcher [behind Ivan Rodriguez and Jose Molina] and maybe as a DH,” said Girardi about Moeller.
