Phil Hughes has struggled of late in his past two starts int he AFL. So what? He is going there to get his innings up..not to throw no-hitters. He finished the regular season on a high note by getting the call back up, and he played well. These few AFL starts aren’t going to erase those. Why can’t Yankee fans have patience? I want to win now as much as anybody, but it’s Phil Hughes! It’s not like he was just ranked in the top 100 prospects in baseball, but Baseball America ranked him #4 overall in 2007 .That means a lot in my book. Scouts can be wrong, but he must hvae great stuff if he was ranked that high. I just beg you fans out there to give the kid a chance. I may be a big Phil supporter, but just give him one season to prove himself. After that, than you can voice your opinion.
NY Post Joel Sherman- Yanks’ Decision Looking Bad
Cashman made this comment:
“I don’t view him any differently than I did at this point last year,” Cashman said. “He just has to pitch and refine his pitches and build his arm strength. That’s why he is in Arizona.”
“Phil’s last two starts weren’t as good as his first two but I’m not concerned,” he said. “We sent him there to get innings.”
Also..check out this interesting stat. (thanks to Peter Abraham):
- Of the 120 pitchers in the Arizona Fall League, 108 of them are older than Hughes. That stat courtesy of Brian Cashman, who shuffled papers in his desk until he found it this morning.
