Jorge Posada would like to play for Puerto Rico in the WBC, but the Yankees might not allow him to play. They want him ready for the start of the season, and they don’t want him to get injured or have any setbacks. Posada is still rehabilitating his right shoulder down in Tampa and reports have said that he is progressing nicely. Reports stated yesterday that Posada’s father said that his son will be playing for PR in the WBC, and that he already started to training for the tournament. Brian Cashman stated today that Jorge Posada will not play for Puerto Rico in the WBC. Yankees media relations director Jason Zillo said that as well. I think it’s great that he wants to participate, but it just isn’t the smart decision right now.
“I am sure he would love to play [in the World Baseball Classic], but he is currently rehabbing from surgery and would not be ready,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.
“He feels fine and wants to play for Puerto Rico,” Posada Sr. reportedly said.
“Obviously, he’s very important to this club,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said recently. “We need him. I’m encouraged right now. … You can talk about playing three out of four [games] or four out of five, but I think early on the important thing is that we don’t abuse him, and allow him to continue to gain strength in that shoulder. I plan on him being our everyday catcher.”
