The Yankees have something that no other team in baseball has. It’s called “The Forumla”. They have the best back end of the bullpen in the major leagues. Come postseason, this becomes a very important role in a team’s success. Joe Torre had this with Mariano Rivera and John Wetteland back in 1996. All he needed was 6 solid innings out of his starter, and he could tun it over the bullpen knowing he gave the ball to the best back end in baseball. Let’s say Sabathia, Burnett, Chamberlain, or Pettitte goes 6 innings..he can turn the ball over to the bullpen and feel confident that he can get an easy win.
1996
Mariano Rivera- 107.2IP (W-L) 8-3 5SV 2.09ERA 130K
John Wetteland- 63.2IP (W-L) 2-3 43SV 2.83ERA 69K
2009
Phil Hughes- 63.0IP (W-L) 4-3 1SV 3.43ERA 65K
Mariano Rivera- 44.2IP (W-L) 1-2 30SV 2.01ERA 50K
When October rolls around, I know that I’ll be confident with Girardi handing the ball over to these two guys. Maybe this time we’ll see Mariano jumping into Posada’s arms.

The formula for Boston baseball is the same as the formula for Boston football—stealing signs. Red Sox have averaged almost 7 runs a game this year against the Yankees and Orioles; less than 5 runs a game against all their other opponents. The statistical difference is too great for it to be by chance. If they know the pitches ahead of time, they’ll win this series too.
