The Yankees designated Cody Ransom for assignment. Anthony Claggett was called up to replace him on the roster. It’s about time Ransom was taken off te team. He hit hit .190/.256/.329 in 31 games for the Yankees
According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, the Yankees signed RHP Russ Ortiz to a minor league contract. This move was made to provide minor-league depth at Triple-A Scranton. Ortiz posted a (W-L) 3-6 record and a 5.57ERA with the Astros before being released in July. It’s a shame, because this guy was once a very good pitcher.
ESPN’s Jorge Arangure Jr. stated that Cuban defectors RHP Yadel Marti, OF Yasser Gomez, and RHP Juan Yasser had been declared free agents and are free to sign with any team. The Yankees could definitely use Marti in their rotation. He is a veteran guy, who is considered major league ready and could join the Yankees rotation immediately.

I’d like to see the Yankees make an attempt at signing Marti even though there really is no way to know if he will be effective in the bigs. Anything to try and find an effective 5 starter is cool with me though.
The truth of the matter is the Yankees have a better team. They should be in first and are in first. However, they haven’t played like the better team when playing the Red Sox. They need to get the monkey off their back and win tonight so that they can move forward and silence their critics. The Yankees want to win more than they lose this weekend and find themselves comfortably in first place come Sunday evening. They should have no problems doing it but then again that’s why they play the games.
