Game one of the ALCS was an important one for the Yankees. The team wanted to take advantage of their home field advantage before they traveled to Los Angeles, where they have had struggled mightily in recent years.
CC Sabathia took the hill knowing exactly what he had to do. He set the tone for the rest of the series, delivering a spectacular 8 inning performance, and allowed only one run. His pitching line was: W, 8IP 4H 1R 1ER 1BB 7K. You couldn’t ask for anything more from the big guy. With his pitch count nearing 100, Girardi was mulling over the decision on whether or not to yank him from the game. He decided to leave CC in for the 8th inning, and had Hughes warming up in the bullpen just in case.
Joe didn’t want to mess around, and had the idea that CC could hand the ball right over to Mariano Rivera. He did exactly that. Mo took the ball in the 9th and started off the inning by tossing a leadoff walk. After that, he recorded the last three outs with ease and picked up his first save of the postseason.
The Yankees offense collected 10 hits, drew 5 walks, and knocked in 4 runs on the game. They didn’t do anything special, but capitalized on the Angels errors. Alex Rodriguez has a sac fly in the bottom of the 1st inning to put the Yankees up 1-0. Hideki Matsui than popped up to short, but nobody caught the ball..which allowed another run to score. That was hilarious. You could clearly see that John Lackey was pissed off. So, the Yankees were up 2-0 after 1 inning of play.
The Yankees would score next in the 5th inning. Hideki Matsui knocked in Johnny Damon on a double to put the Yankees ahead 3-1. Derek Jeter singled on a line drive to centerfield in the 6th inning, and knocked in the fourth run for the Bombers. They went up 4-1, and that wound up being the final score.
Johnny Damon went 2-for-5 on the game, and collected 2 runs. Jeter went 2-for-5, picking up a run and an RBI. A-Rod went 1-for-2 with an RBI. (Sac fly) Hideki Matsui went 2-for-3 and knocked in 2RBI’s.
The Yankees did what they had to do and took the first game of the series. Game 2 is tomorrow night. Burnett vs. Saunders. Let’s hope they can get the game in.
