Jimmy Rollins stated before the World Series that the Phillies would win in five games. That didn’t happen. The Yankees wound up taking the series in six games and really shut him up.
I heard things about Philadelphia fans before this series, but I had no idea how bad they really were. I thought Red Sox fans were bad, (okay..they are) but it seems to me that Philly fans are just as bad..if not worse. Former Yankee, David Wells put it best when he said, “The people in that town would give The Finger to their own mom.”
They showed just how classy they are by flipping cars, causing riots in the streets, jumping on moving cabs and almost dropping their own babies when they celebrated their World Series victory last year. The Chicago Cubs fans have been suffering a lot longer than them, and the excuse they can come up with was that they haven’t won in so long?
I hear that they are very bad to other fans and to their own players. They cheer when opposing players are injured and boo their own players when they fail to accomplish a play properly. The Phillies fans booed the kids on an easter egg hunt, booed the Phillie Phanatic for not catching a foul ball, and booed Glee for their performance before the WS.
I know the Yankees and Red Sox fans have their share of rowdy, obnoxious and unruly fans…I just didn’t realize that the Phillies were viewed like this from the rest fo the sports world.
Is Charlie Manuel helping the case when he says something like this? It’s like he wants them to boo everyone.
“I notice sometimes if fans are near our dugout and talking to our players, they always want to talk about last year, and that’s good; I want them to keep coming to the games,” Manuel said. “But I want the fans to start telling them they want to win this year, too. Of course they love us and everything, but maybe they should get on them a little bit.”
It also didn’t help their case, when Macy’s ran an ad celebrating the Philadelphia Phillies victory over the Yankees in the World Series prematurely. Now those shirts will go to a poor country and they will wear them. It would be pretty funny to see that.
They seem to talk a lot also…Cole Hamels calling the Mets choke artists (even though they really are) and Jimmy Rollins predicting that they were going to take the World Series in five games. Don’t talk if you can’t back it up. You’re not Mark Messier.
I don’t want to be stereotypical and say that all Philadelphia fans are like this, because they’re not. I just found that I learned a lot about the Philadelphia sports scene from this Fall Classic.

Oh, you also forgot that they figured out Rivera. When the Eagles were going to the Super Bowl, at the time I lived near Philly (but in NJ). Needless to say, even the broadcasters on the local TV stations (abc, nbc, cbs, etc) were just as bad as their fans.
