“Greg Maddux was the unique pitcher when it came to durability,” Boras said of another client. “And [Damon] is the Greg Maddux of position players when it comes to durability.”
Yes, Scott Boras compared Johnny Damon to Greg Maddux, one of baseball’s all time great pitchers. Typically when I think of
durability I think of this guy or this guy. Boras also stated that Damon also deserves the same consideration, contract wise, that Jeter is going to get at the end of the 2010 season, which the popular consensus is about 3-4 year contract. In comparing Damon to Jeter, Boras also stated that as a 1-2 duo at the top of the Yankees lineup, they ‘relied’ on each other. I find that assumption a little bit hard to swallow. Regardless of whoever was hitting behind Jeter in the number 2 slot, its likely Jeter didn’t change his approach at the plate.
Boras has to be careful in his approach with Damon and the Yankees. If Boras pushes too hard for a 3 to 4 year contract, which seems likely at this point, I can see the Yankees passing on Damon. Don’t get me wrong, I like Damon, but I don’t think I can watch him for more than one more season, if that, being run on by guys like Ryan Howard (See: World Series). I’m not being too harsh, am I?

8 more days until pitchers and catchers report
We all saw this coming, Boras will always play for the most cash and years possible. It’s really gonna be a question of will Damon take a year and and option from the Yankees? or more years from another team that most likely isn’t a contender…
Your analysis is sound, will be interesting to see the Boras-Cashman dynamic especially after the A-Rod issue 2 years ago….
However, I am amenable to more than 1 year for Damon, respectfully, but obviously not in Jeter territory. (speculation being 4 yrs/100 mill after ‘10 for the Captain)
