It looks like Derek and Tex didn’t think they had enough accolades, as both of them claimed a Silver Slugger Award this season at their respective positions.
Derek Jeter just won his fourth consecutive AL Silver Slugger Award, while batting .334AVG with 18HR, 66RBI, 107R and 30 stolen bases. That’s quite impressive, especially for the position that he plays. Sure, there are a few that hit like that from the shortstop position, but it’s something you rarely see. Jorge Posada put it best:
“He’s going to be the only Yankee to ever hit 3,000 hits,” Jorge Posada said this year. “That tells you right there what kind of player [he is]. All the players that came through here, and he’s going to be the only one with 3,000 hits. He’s a special guy. A really special guy.”
Teixeira, won his third Silver Slugger of his career. It’s not a surprise that he won this, as he is also in high consideration for the Most Valuable Player Award. Let’s not forget that this is the same guy who entered the New York sports scene having hit 30HR’s and knocked in 100+RBI’s five years in a row. This year, Tex had a .292AVG, 39HR, 122RBI, and 103R. With the terribly slow start Teixeira had in the beginning of the season, who would have guessed that he would have such a terrific season?
“A guy like Tex, you know that he’s a great player, but I don’t think you can appreciate it as much [until] you see him every day,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said this year. “You see all the little things that he does. You might play him in a three-game series and not see those things.”
