Our main Yankees source down in Tampa informed us on Monday night the Yanks have been in discussions with Atlanta regarding Derek Lowe. If you remember we reported that Atlanta contacted Brian Cashman in late November to let him know Lowe was available. As has been recently reported over the past month, the Braves are looking to rid themselves of Lowe’s contract. The Yankees had a keen interest in the sinker baller last off-season before deciding on A.J. Burnett. They feel that Lowe would be a perfect backend of the rotation starter. As far as other pitching options go, the team is showing considerable interest in both Ben Sheets and Justin Duchscherer.
On the DH front, the Yanks are showing some interest in New Jersey native Jack Cust, who was non-tendered this past weekend by Oakland.
Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says the Braves aren’t necessarily looking for a right-handed bat in exchange for Derek Lowe. They’d accept prospects, too.

This is dumb. Cust strikes out close to 200 times a year! Between Cust, Granderson and Swisher pitchers are going to get tons of Ks!
I’d rather see our old friend Nick Johnson than Cust.
Lowe is making a ton of money, I’m not interested in him even if he weren’t though.
