Andy Pettitte made his first start of the spring, allowing five hits, two runs and a walk over four innings of work. He struck out four in the process. In the 5th inning, there was a bit of a scare when Damaso Marte was hit with a line drive in the back from Ryan Howard’s bat. It turns out that it was just a bruise on his lower back. That’s always good to hear. You kind of got the feeling that he was okay, considering he walked off the field on his own. Damaso Marte couldn’t even record an out today. He gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits . Sanit entered the game and recorded the three outs in the inning with ease.
All eyes were on today, as people considered this a major start in the 5th starter competition. He entered the game in the beginning of the 6th inning, and pitched until the very end of the game. I didn’t expect much from him, being on a 60 pitches/4 innings limit, but he did a good job. Joba tossed four innings, giving up one earned run on two hits and a walk. He also struck out three batters. He lowered his ST ERA from 27.00 to 16.20. You have to give him credit. The competition has definitely tightened up.
The Yankees’ offense collected 11 hits and two walks, but only wound up with 2 runs by the end of the game. Francisco Cervelli singled in the 4th innning, allowing Randy Winn to cross the plate. The next run was scored in the very next inning, when Nick Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which brought Cervelli home.
Noteworthy: Brett Gardner 2-for-3, 1R (Single, Triple) Francisco Cervelli 3-for-3, 1RBI (2 Singles, Double)
With this loss, the Yankees spring record moves to (6-8). Tomorrow night, the Yankees will be hosting a night game (7:05PM ET) at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida against the Tampa Bay Rays. The pitching matchup will be RHP Javier Vazquez vs. LHP Carlos Hernandez. Chan Ho Park will come on in relief of Javy.

Personally I’m worried about the NYY 2010 season. I really like Gardner & Cervelli. I think Granderson is a huge asset LF or CF, 2hole or 7 hole. Hughes should be starter 5 -Joba set up Mo. Tex is a major stick & vac @ 1B. CC great. A Rod & Deej will have their usual stellar output. Cano OK but needs to stay out of the clubs.
But if just one of them goes down & out for an extended stretch – I’m worried.

Juke Early- I wouldn’t worry about the offense. The Yankees have the best offense in the major leagues. The Red Sox are trailing them. If someone was to go down, I’m sure they would make a move. You can’t predict injuries, so don’t even think like that.
As long as the pitching staff is healthy, this team should be just fine.
-Zell
Lol, Yankee fans feeling concerned about their team is a slap in the face to the fans of all other teams. Your point is valid, it’s a veteran team but Zell’s spot on in pointing out the nature of injuries is volatile to say the least.
