“On May 25, 1922, Babe Ruth lost the captaincy of the Yankees, was suspended from the game, and fined $200 by Ban Johnson. During the game, which was played versus the Senators at the Polo Grounds, Ruth was thrown out at second base by an outfielder. Ruth disagreed with the call and threw dirt into the face of umpire George Hildebrand who promptly ejected Ruth. On the way to the dugout, a fan called Ruth a “lowdown bum and other names that got me mad” so he attacked the fan in the stands as well.”
Isn’t that something? Babe Ruth’s tenure as captain of the New York Yankees was the shortest in team history, lasting only five days. I guess he wasn’t “Captain Material.”

A lot of people don’t know that Ruth was an incorrigable juvenile delinquent as a kid living in the orphanage in Baltimore. He was no saint. That sounds exactly like the kind of behavior you’d expect from him if he were to snap, as he did that day.
The Babe was nothing if not colorful. Wonder how many beers and dogs he had that day?
Babe Ruth is always my hero.
Babe Ruth was quite the character and that’s why he’s always been a fan favorite for me. Yes the talent was impeccable but when you can bring charisma and persona to a team, I like you.
